Detailed description of Blackhawk Run Golf Course

Blackhawk Run Golf Course, previously named Stockton Atwood Community Golf Club is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in Stockton, Illinois.

Blackhawk Run Golf Course first opened for play in 1964 as a 9-hole facility. The course was expanded to 18-hole in 1996.

Blackhawk, has wide open fairways and a few elevated greens. The terrain is rolling, and there are trees that can alter your shots. There is a man-made lake that comes into play a few times on the original layout, and a creek running through the new design that also affects several holes. The signature hole is #18, a 189-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot over water to a well-bunkered green.

Black Hawk Run was named after the Black Hawk of the Sauk Indians. Black Hawk (or Black Sparrow Hawk as he was orinally known) led a dissident band of Sauk and Fox indians into the rock river valley of northwest Illinois in the spring of 1832 in an attempt to reclaim tribal lands from American settlers. The move precipitated the tragic "Black Hawk War" and led to the decimation of the band by elements of the Illiinois Militia and U.S. Army.

Blue tees: par-72, 6,478 yards, 72.0 / 127

White tees: par-72, 6,245 yards, 70.7 / 123

Red tees: par-76, 5,591 yards, 70.3 / 126

$21 (cart included), played on Thursday, August 2012 at noon

The course in now called Blackhawk Run. We had a 2 for 1 coupon that we got at a golf show so we paid $25 for both of us with cart. Best deal ever!!! Very friendly people working there. It's a bit hard to get to because there is little signage on Rte 20, (gps works well to find the course) but well worth the effort to get there. The fairways were hard hit by the drought this summer, so the downgrade is based on fairway condition, but the greens and the rest of the course were in good shape. Rolling terrain and roomy fairways make it a nice place to play. The day we played was after a rain storm. The course way dry, and no one else was on it. The 2 of us played 18 in 3 hrs and 20 mins. What a joy! There is new ownership, and they are trying to make the course better. Any golfers traveling between Chicago and Galena should give Blackhawk Run a try.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Ranks with the best in this price level, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
